![]() Felt grateful to have "seen" some of our team on our Laptops under the Lights Zoom call on Friday night -- and then had fun working out with not only some of our team but also some of Trumansburg via Zoom on Saturday morning. Gracie and Emma Wright run for Trumansburg, and their mom owns and runs April Wright Fitness & Cycling. She's streaming bootcamp workouts that you can do in your home, free of charge for high school athletes and $15 per session for adults. I can promise you: you'll work up as sweat and will feel like you got in a substantive workout, without ever having left the space a yoga mat takes up on your floor. I'm pretty sure I'll be feeling those jump lunges tomorrow when I try to walk down the stairs..... ![]() Here's the note I scrawled last night. I keep a notepad and paper next to my bed when I think of something and don't want to forget. Team: I miss you, and I'm so excited that we'll get to "see" each other tonight at our zoom meeting!!! Check your email for instructions and the link to join. Email me if you don't see the link or have any questions! Meanwhile: Nick Symmonds posted this great video with tips to get through cancellations. He's had his share of injuries and racing experiences that didn't go as planned -- and he's also demonstrated tremendous resilience and enjoyed a successful career on and off the track. Take a look. Peloton is offering access to it's bike-free fitness app for 90 days. Some of you know I have a Peloton, but when I'm traveling (and even when I'm just not in the mood for the bike), I often use the app. There are lots of workouts of all different lengths, and the coaches are incredibly motivational, giving the extra push we all could use when we're using lots of energy to just get through our days. I'm also a big fan of the new meditations they've added. This sounds like a big ol' product endorsement.... sorry. But not sorry. Any and all tools we can use to stay healthy and active while maintaining social distance are good! Okay, everyone, set your alarm. We're still going to make a team gathering happen even in this time of social distancing.
7-8pm on Friday. Check your email tonight/tomorrow. Good morning, Lansing T&F!
Email me when you can about your thoughts on whether to order team shirts or whether to make a donation to a charity (ie food bank, Lansing Lunchbox, etc) Last day for the webstore! (Just a note: these items are being sold at cost; this isn't a fundraiser.) Laps Under the Lights IS our fundraiser and online giving remains live. And then just another nudge of encouragement: STAY ACTIVE. Work up a sweat. I can't encourage this enough. You can do a workout that we send in our weekly emails or pick a circuit from darebee.com or go for a run or a bike ride (stay 6' away from others). You can use equipment you have at home if you're fortunate enough to have a treadmill or stationary bike. You can run up and down your stairs or do high knees or burpees. This takes SELF-DISCIPLINE. But it's worth it. And here's the honest confession: I have to force myself, to exercise self-discipline, to do this too. Pajamas and coffee and the newspaper till late in the morning is really tempting. But when I keep a schedule, get myself up bright and early and into the workout clothes I laid out the night before so I don't have an excuse and then workout: I never regret it. I give thanks that I have health and when the workout gets hard, I remind myself that I am getting stronger and that I'm grateful for the opportunity. It's not always what I want to do -- but it's what I get to do and also, frankly, what I need to do. My mental health is better when I've worked hard. My ability to help others is better when I've burned off some extra energy first thing. And I feel connected to all of you when I work out -- because I know that we as coaches ask you to do hard, brave things all the time. So I ask the same of myself and know that we are in this together. Stay well, Bobcats. Keep in touch and share how your workouts are going. Instructions for the (optional but fun team building) virtual scavenger hunt went out to athletes. 3:30-5:30 today from home using the Goosechase app. I can send out the activities via email if using the app isn't an option and someone wants to participate.
Also wanted to pass along one of my favorite online workout resources: https://darebee.com/ This site has a huge database of workouts that can be done in/at home, even if you don't have any equipment. We'll keep sharing the team training -- but the priority right now is MOVING DAILY even when we need to stay home. Substituting a workout on our training schedule for something else is fine. Also awesome: https://swimswam.com/free-online-yoga-classes-for-swimmers-for-the-next-two-months/ These aren't just stretching -- they are strength too! And it's definitely not just for swimmers. Stay well, Coach Becca Welcome to Week Two of varsity track and field!
This is certainly not the week two that we were expecting....but as we told our athletes last week: we are flexible and resilient. Spring weather is never guaranteed, and we've had to figure out alternate workouts or meet schedules in the past. This is more extreme -- but we can and will get through this as a Lansing T&F community. Practices, Meets & Meetings Until further notice, all practices and meets are suspended at least through April 12. The parent meeting scheduled for tomorrow, March 16, is cancelled. Laps Under the Lights The actual event has been cancelled, but we are leaving our online giving link live. We understand that families are having to evaluate their budgets at this moment, and we as a program are doing the same. That being said, our program has grown tremendously over the last five years and we hopefully anticipate that it will continue to be a large program. Any and all gifts are greatly appreciated and will be used to further the development of our athletes and their teams. Training We will continue to send training plans to our athletes (see attached). We cannot mandate that athletes complete these workouts. We are sending them because we believe that a daily routine which includes physical activity is critical to staying well -- always, and especially in this unprecedented and challenging time.
Our webstore is still open through 3/18. Originally, we'd planned to place an additional order for cotton team shirts for all athletes; the cost of this would be covered by the team. That said, I'll be emailing with the team to get their input as to whether they still want to move ahead with a shirt order (knowing that we won't receive it until we return to school). I write this only so you know that we are still deciding on the shirts in case that changes your mind on whether to make a purchase from the store. Website The goal is for our website (lansingxctf.weebly.com) to be updated by tomorrow including posted workouts and notes. Moving forward, I'll try to limit emails and use the website more heavily. Stay well, Bobcats, and keep in touch! Coach Becca (coachbeccalovenheim@gmail.com) With indoor track wrapped up, outdoor track will now get underway on Monday, March 9!
The first weekly email of the season went out; if you did not receive it, please email Coach Becca so you can be added to the list. Our team webstore is now open. Orders are accepted through March 18. Laps Under the Lights will take place on Friday, March 20 and our online donation link is live. Thank you for giving and sharing; the funds raised help us tremendously! It's going to be a great spring with our biggest program roster in several years. We thank you in advance for your support -- communication, cheering, donating snacks, providing team dinners, and helping us nurture our track and field community! We are so proud of our six athletes who qualified for the NYSPHSAA Championships and represented our school and section as they competed with the best in the state. Fantastic effort by all with Gwen earning a spot on the podium with her third place finish in pole vault! Lansing results: Gwen: 3rd overall, pole vault Kiara: 7th in her section, pole vault Sam: 30th, 55m Cat: 10th, High jump Kyle: 15th, high jump Kyle & his section IV DMR teammates: 10th Complete results here. |
